The Soulmate: Book Review
Hi friends! Today I’m sharing my thoughts on The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth!
My Goodreads rating: 4/5 stars
The book has two narrators, Pippa Gerard and Amanda Cameron. Pippa is an Australian lawyer and mother of two daughters who moved to a coastal town outside of Melbourne with her husband, Gabe. One downside to the house is that it’s a famous spot for people to end their lives. Since moving in, Gabe can talk everyone away from the cliff’s edge. That is, until Amanda shows up. The timeline alternates between the present (after Amanda’s death) and the past (events leading up to her death).
There is no shocker here; the book is about soulmates. Pippa thought Gabe was her soulmate, and Amanda thought Max was hers.
I didn’t love the characters, but I didn’t hate them. Hepworth did a great job of showing the good and bad sides of the characters. Amanda had a husband who kept secrets from her but loved her deeply. Max was so kind that he helped Gabe but ended up enabling him and putting him in a position to do severe damage. At the beginning of the book, I was more intrigued by Pippa’s perspective, but by the end, I was rooting for Amanda.
The book had many twists and turns, so I waited for some big reveal. Hepworth withheld details about each marriage, so the reader couldn’t tell what was genuinely happening until the end. The structure held my interest. However, I did not find some of the twists all that shocking.
The Soulmate was an easy read that I couldn’t put down. I removed a star because this book seems like a thriller with all of its twists, but it turns into more of a drama.
