Hi friends! Today I’m sharing 7 tips for hosting a vintage cake decorating night!
1. PREPARE IN ADVANCE
Bake the Cakes: To save time and keep the focus on decorating, have pre-baked cakes ready to go. Opt for single-layer cakes or cupcakes in classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate, or red velvet. A 4” cake pan and a box mix will make about 6 mini cakes.
Prep Frosting: Offer a selection of frosting colors and flavors, including classic buttercream or cream cheese frosting. Provide piping bags with vintage-style nozzles (e.g., round tip for intricate designs and rosettes and scalloped for texture).
2. SET THE TABLE
Table Setting: Lay the foundation with a soft pink or floral table cloth. Set out a 6” cake board for each guest to decorate their cake. You can use bowls, teacups, or even cupcake liners to hold the sprinkles.
Flowers: Fill mismatched vases with simple floral arrangements.
Lighting: Use lamps and/or dim overhead lighting and light a few candles for a cozy atmosphere. Use a variety of pillar and votive candles to give your table dimension.
3. TOPPINGS
Lay out pastel sprinkles, edible pearls, ribbon, cherries, and anything your heart desires.
4. DECORATING DEMO
Kick off the party with a quick video demonstration to inspire your guests. Give each guest a paper plate for practicing the piping designs.
5. CREATE PHOTO-OPS
Set up a simple backdrop for photos. Use pastel balloons, string fairy lights, or tape foil hearts to the wall for a picture-worthy setup.
6. OFFER REFRESHMENTS
Drinks: Complement your cake-decorating fun with refreshments. Serve tea, coffee, and fizzy mocktails in mismatched teacups or glassware. Consider using plastic glassware and tying a bow at the base for a cute touch!
Snacks & Treats: Pair drinks with finger sandwiches, macarons, and chocolate-dipped strawberries for a decadent spread.
7. PARTY FAVORS
Send your guests home with mini cake boxes for their decorated creations. Consider lining the box with floral or heart patterned paper to spruce it up.
