Summer Reads Ranked
Hi y’all! Today I’m sharing the books I’ve read this summer and ranking their ability to captivate, entertain, and leave a lasting impression.
Summer is the perfect time to escape into a good book. There’s nothing like a compelling story to make the most of the season, but with so many options, it can be tough to choose the perfect read. To help you, I’m sharing which books are worth your time and which ones you can skip.
1) Lady Tan’s Circle of Woman - Lisa See
5/5 stars
Lady Tan’s Circle of Women is a historical fiction novel that transports readers to the rich and intricate world of 15th-century China. Known for her meticulous research and ability to weave compelling narratives highlighting women’s lives in history, See delivers a powerful and engaging story that resonates on many levels. Some readers may find the pacing a bit slow, particularly in the sections that delve deeply into the medical practices and historical details. However, these elements add depth and authenticity to the story, making it a rewarding read for those who appreciate historical fiction. It may not be the lightest summer read, but I learned so much about a time period I knew nothing about.
2) The Teacher - Freida McFadden
4.5/5 stars
The Teacher is a gripping psychological thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Known for her ability to craft suspenseful, twist-filled stories, McFadden delivers a page-turner where no one knows what to believe or who is at fault. While it is a quick and entertaining read, the plot was far-fetched, and the characters were immature. However, if you enjoy a fast-paced, twisty plot, this is unlikely to be a drawback.
3) The Paradise Problem - Christina Lauren
4.5/5 stars
The Paradise Problem is a romance novel that blends humor, emotion, and family dynasty. The writing duo, known for their ability to create compelling characters and swoon-worthy romance, delivers a hit that transports readers to a tropical paradise with a rich family filled with secrets. It is a highly enjoyable read but a bit predictable and basic. However, this doesn’t detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the story.
4) Bye, Baby - Carola Lovering
4.5/5 stars
Bye, Baby is a compelling psychological thriller that delves deep into the complexities of love, betrayal, and the haunting consequences of past secrets. Known for her gripping storytelling and intricate character development, Lovering delivers a novel that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. While it is an engaging and well-crafted thriller, there are a few frustrating plot holes. However, the twists and turns keep the pages turning.
5) Real Americans - Rachel Khong
4.2/5 stars
Real Americans is a thought-provoking book about identity, belonging, and the complexities of the immigrant experience in America. Known for her sharp wit and insightful storytelling, Khong writes a narrative that resonates with readers on multiple levels. While it is a compelling and insightful read, the non-linear structure was confusing, as the three perspectives did not follow a clear chronological order. The narrative felt somewhat disjointed at times. The book tried to cover too many societal issues, which left many plot lines open-ended.
6) Just For the Summer - Abby Jimenez
3.5/5 stars
Just For the Summer is a romance that perfectly captures summer love while diving deeper into themes of personal growth and healing. Known for her witty dialogue and relatable characters, Jimenez delivers the perfect beach read. It was an enjoyable read, but the story is a bit predictable and cheesy.
