The Housemaid: Book Review

Hi friends! Today I’m reviewing The Housemaid by Freida McFadden!

My Goodreads rating: 5/5 stars

Millie Calloway, a young woman in her 20s, is hired as a housemaid for the wealthy Winchesters. Despite her criminal record, she gets the job and moves out of her car into the mansion. Between Millie’s new tiny attic bedroom that only locks from the outside and the landscaper, Enzo, warning her of danger, she knows something isn’t right.

Nina Winchester is the one who hired her, but she also meets Andrew, Nina’s attractive husband, and Cecilia, her nine-year-old daughter. Andrew quickly becomes the only bearable family member due to his compassion and grace. Nina’s behavior is erratic, switching between friendly and spiteful, and Cecilia is downright bratty.

Millie’s character confused me. She seemed to ignore all the clues pointing to something wrong at the Winchester house. I would have been out of there when I saw the attic bedroom. I also don’t know why Millie would risk being locked in there after being locked up in jail for the last ten years.

I did not like Nina. Both Millie and Nina feel trapped because of circumstances from their past. Even if that’s the case, Nina could have gone about things differently. Her behavior was egotistical and confusing. I see why she did what she did, but her treatment of Millie was uncalled for.

We read this book from both Millie’s and Nina’s perspectives. I think this was the perfect way to format the novel. Neither character revealed much about themselves for most of the book, which added to the suspense.

Reading The Housemaid was a surprising experience because it is one of those books that can keep you reading all night. This thriller was a wild ride that had me on the edge of my seat. I didn’t expect how satisfying the end was going to be.

Freida McFadden is an outstanding author, and I’m excited to read the next book in the series. This novel held my attention and topped most other thrillers I have read. I give the Housemaid a perfect score.

Next up: The Housemaid’s Secret

Thanks for reading!
