Denim Fit Guide

Hi y’all! Today I’m sharing a guide for finding the perfect fit, size, and rise.

This denim fit guide is meant to teach you the different styles of denim jeans and how they fit your body. Understanding denim fits can help you choose the perfect pair of jeans that flatter your body and suit your personal style. Let’s get started!

  1. FIND YOUR FIT

Barrel Jeans- A wide-leg silhouette that tapers at the ankles.

Wide Leg Jeans- Roomy and loose-fitting legs, which are wider from the hips to the hem.

  • Offers a relaxed and laid-back style

  • Provides a classic and timeless silhouette

  • Offers comfort and versatility

Flare/Bootcut Jeans- Flares out from the knee to the ankle.

  • Ideal for wearing with boots or heals

  • Lengthens the legs and creates a flattering silhouette

Skinny/Slim Jeans- Tight-fitting from waist to ankle.

  • Emphasizes curves

  • Narrow leg opening

  • Provides a sleek and modern look

Boyfriend/Relaxed Jeans- Loose fit with plenty of room throughout the leg.

  • Offers a casual and effortless look

2. FIND YOUR RISE

High Rise- Waistline sits above the natural waist. They create a flattering silhouette by elongating the legs and emphasizing the waist.

  • Best for: individuals who want added coverage and support around the midsection or those who want to elongate their torso.

Mid Rise- Waistline sits between the natural waist and the hips. They offer a balanced and flattering fit without sitting too high or low on the body.

  • Best for: most body types and proportions.

Low Rise- Waistline sits around the hips. They offer a casual and laid-back look and can create a hip-hugging effect.

  • Best for: individuals who want to elongate their torso or prefer a more relaxed look around the waist.

3. FIND YOUR LENGTH

Cropped- Hem stops short above the ankle. They offer a relaxed and effortless look for everyday wear.

Ankle- Falls at the ankle or just above for a flattering length for many body types. Ankle-length jeans are a trendy and fashion-forward style. They pair well with ankle boots, sneakers, or sandals.

Full-Length- Extends to the ankles or slightly beyond, elongating the legs. They are classic and timeless jeans that can worn year-round.

4. FIND YOUR SIZE

Petite- Designed for individuals with shorter inseams and smaller proportions.

Plus- Offers comfortable and flattering options for a range of body types.

Tall- Designed for individuals with longer inseams and taller proportions.

5. FIND YOUR WASH

Raw/Dry Wash- Untreated and unwashed after the dyeing process. It has a deep, rich indigo color and a stiff, rigid texture. Raw denim is known for its ability to develop unique fades and creases as it molds to the wearer’s body.

Stone Wash- Stone washing is a process in which denim is washed with pumice stones or abrasive materials to create a worn-in, vintage look. This technique softens the fabric and gives it a faded, aged appearance with subtle highs and lows.

Acid Wash- Acid washing is a treatment in which denim is washed with chlorine or acid-based chemicals to create a bleached or mottled effect. This process removes some indigo dye, resulting in a lightened, distressed appearance with irregular patterns.

Vintage Wash- Vintage washing is a process that replicates the look and feel of vintage denim. It typically involves a combination of stone washing, enzyme washing, and hand sanding to create a soft, worn-in appearance with subtle distressing and fading.

Light Wash- Treated with extensive washing and bleaching to achieve a pale, faded appearance. It has a sun-bleached look with prominent fading, giving it a relaxed and casual vibe.

Medium Wash- Falls between dark and light in color intensity. It has a mid-range indigo hue with moderate fading and distressing, giving it a lived-in yet still relatively clean appearance.

Dark Wash- Treated with minimal washing and finishing to maintain a deep, saturated indigo color. It has a rich, uniform appearance with minimal fading or distressing, making it a classic and versatile option for casual or dressy outfits.

Rinse Wash- A process in which denim is lightly washed to remove excess dye and finish. It results in a deep, uniform color with minimal fading or distressing, making it a clean and polished option for casual or dressy outfits.

Black Wash- Treated with black dye or pigment to achieve a deep, rich black color. It has a sleek and modern appearance with minimal fading or distressing, making it a versatile option for edgy or sophisticated looks.
