Spring 2024: Home Inspiration
Hi y’all! Spring is upon us, making it the perfect time for a little home refresh. Today I’m sharing some Pinterest inspiration of what I think we’ll be seeing a lot of this spring regarding home decor, as well as some of my own home design tips!
The “form follows function” principle emphasizes creating living spaces that prioritize usability, practicality, and efficiency without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. Adding warmth through color to functional furniture pieces is a powerful way to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. An example of this could be a stool or swivel chair rendered in rich-hued velvet. Another functional way to add warmth is through materials. Wood is one of my favorite materials used to warm up a space. I love reclaimed wood because it typically has a rich history and unique character.
Another way to prioritize functionality is to choose furniture pieces that don’t just look good but serve a purpose and meet your specific needs. For example, a daybed or loveseat is perfect for extra seating but could also be a relaxing spot to curl up.
Texture is crucial in adding depth and visual interest to your space. I think we will see more use of burl wood, fluting, and pleats this spring. I have seen more natural burl wood used in furniture and cabinetry. I did some research, and burl wood forms when a tree experiences stress or injury, leading to the abnormal growth of rounded or irregularly shaped outgrowths on its trunk or branches. These growths, known as burls, contain swirls and irregular patterns that create a highly decorative appearance. I’ve also seen a lot of fluted furniture pieces in stores. Fluting refers to the decorative vertical grooves carved or molded into a surface. This design element would give visual interest to something like a dining room table. I think we will see the return of box-pleated sofas this year. The box-pleated design provides a clean and tailored appearance, making it suitable for traditional and contemporary styles. It adds texture and depth to the sofa.
When planning the furniture for a room, think about which piece you want to be the focal point. If you want your couch to be the main attraction of your living room, the color and texture you choose will set the tone for the entire room’s decor. Or maybe you want an accent chair to be the statement piece, and choose a faux fur fabric. If you want the bed to stand out in your bedroom, a pile of pillows and cozy throw blankets add dimension.
Overall, let your home be a reflection of you and a place that brings you joy!
